THE WISDOM OF THE SAINTS

Our ministries are guided by the teachings of the Church, this includes the wisdom of the saints.  To sample some of the real world wisdom which we strive to shape our ministries around please click here.  We will periodically feature different saints here for you to learn from.

Respect for Life Remembrance

Every year in September at the memorial for the unborn at St. Mary Cemetery the Knights and their families gather and pray in remembrance of the unborn who have died.  Our pro life efforts have been very instrumental in turning the tide of opinion in our country.  We will keep up the efforts and continue to make it a priority.

Basketball Free-Throw

Every year the Knights sponsor and run a free-throw competition for the middle school children in the Monsignor Haddad Middle School gym.  Both boys and girls compete shooting a total of twenty shots each with those scoring the most points advancing to the next round.  Our ultimate winners are honored at one of our monthly Knights dinners and presented with a plaque and prize money.  It's a fun competition and a great opportunity for our youths to get the know the Knights and for us to get to know them!

Veterans Clothing Drive

Once a year the Knights hold a clothing drive for our veterans at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans. Men and women who have served their country in the military to protect the freedoms we cherish are benefited by simple gestures of gratitude of used and new clothing. Many of our veterans suffer from physical and emotional scars which can impact them negatively for the rest of their lives.  This is a simple but important way to help.

Needham Community Council

The Knights often help other local charities in the community and one of our favorites is the Needham Community Council.  When we become aware of specific and urgent needs we call on our brother Knights to pitch in and donate or contribute as their situation allows to ensure our neighbors in need know that someone has their back.  Donations of food, clothing, and other items are most common.

Random Acts of Kindness

The Knights meet monthly and members are encouraged to share situations they are aware of about families or individuals who need help, and ideas on what we could do to ease their circumstances.  In addition prayer intentions are voiced and the entire council prays for all intentions.

Charity of the Month

Every month the Knights choose a worthy cause to support and through an appropriate combination of efforts we seek to assist and further the work of that cause.  The current month's charity can be found under the "Events" tab on this site by clicking on "charity of the month".

OUR MINISTRIES & ACTIVITIES

The Fr. Daniel Kennedy Council of the Knights of Columbus in Needham has established a number of ministries and activities over the years. Our efforts benefit our neighbors both near and far, as we participate in a number of national K of C programs in addition to our local causes and programs.  We are always seeking new ways to help. Bring us yours!

Briarwood Birthdays

Once a month a group of Knights visit Briarwood nursing home in Needham to celebrate the birthdays of all residents who have birthdays that month.  We bring cake and song sheets, and we lead sing-a-longs with our local elders.  It's a great deal of fun and an enjoyable time for residents and Knights alike.  A simple, kind example of sharing God's love with those who have spent their lives building our community and families.

Saturday Morning Boys

At 7:00 AM on the first Saturday of every month a group of Knights gather at our hall with "coffee and crumpets" to pray, discuss the readings and Gospel for that Sunday's Mass, and reflect on our faith, its teachings and its relevance in our lives today.  You do not need to be a Knight to attend!  Any Catholic man is welcomed.  Discussions can be profound, thought provoking, and funny at the same time.

Tootsie Roll Fundraiser

Perhaps the fundraiser the Knights are most known for, every fall we stake out a number of high traffic areas in Needham (Sudbury Farms, Trader Joe's, CVS, and our local churches) and don our bright yellow vests and canisters and collect money from the good people of Needham to help support adults and children with intellectual and physical disabilities. Money raised supports Special Olympics, buys wheelchairs, and other equipment needed to help our disabled brothers and sisters live full and productive lives.

Scholarships

The Knights contribute money every year to a number of scholarships. These include scholarships for eighth grade students at Monsignor Haddad Middle School who are planning on attending a Catholic high school, and recently Catholic college scholarships as well.  Catholic education is a critical element in faith formation and the Knights do all we can to support it.

Humanitarian Relief

Throughout the year the Knights work with organizations locally as well as internationally to help men, women and children in need.  Local organizations like Father Bill's MainSpring and My Brother's Keeper receive support from the Knights as does The CRUDEM Foundation, a Catholic organization focused on humanitarian aid and healthcare services for the people of Haiti.  And in 2018 The Knights partnered with O'Hara's Food and Spirits to raise money for Hurricane Relief for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands through Catholic Charities.

Support for Religious Orders and Vocations

The Knights assist local religious orders like the Poor Clare Nuns and The Sisters of Life with financial and material donations as well as scholarships for Seminarians attending Saint John's Seminary in Brighton.

Rides to Sunday Mass

Many Catholic seniors in Needham have limited options for getting to Mass on Sunday.  The Knights have answered the call and provide rides for seniors to Sunday Mass, door to door.  If you know of any seniors who would like help getting to Mass, please let us know!

We're happy to help!
